Ngorongoro Crater Highlands Maasai Village Tour
Overview:
Ngorongoro Crater highland tour takes you through the diverse landscapes of the Ngorongoro Crater Highlands. You will hike through grassy plains and the mountainous countryside as well as thick mountain forest and the savannah landscape of the Rift Valley. Apart from unique landscapes and seeing wild animals, this trek allows insight into the daily routine of the Masai people.
Itinerary Details:
For Ngorongoro Crater Highland tour, you will depart in afternoon from camp/hotel with your guide, an armed park ranger and a Maasai from the village, to enjoy a walk over the Ngorongoro highlands as you head towards the village. The walk takes approximately one and a half hours, at a gentle pace, and is a great opportunity to look out for wildlife and learn about the flora and fauna up close. While giraffe are conspicuous by their absence on game drives on the Crater floor, the rolling hills and plateaus of the Crater’s outside walls are home to impressive herds.
Should you prefer not to walk to the village, you can alternatively be driven there direct from camp.
On arrival at the village, you can expect to be greeted in the traditional manner: plenty of singing and dancing, with participation very much encouraged! There is then the opportunity to learn about some of the customary practices, such as fire-making or beadwork, and to speak to the villagers in their homes. Questions are very welcome – with your guide happy to interpret as necessary. It is worth noting that it can be quite smoky in the houses if the fires are lit inside.
During your visit, there is also the opportunity to purchase handmade leather and beadwork from the villagers, although these are also available in the camp shop.
Once your time in the village has come to an end, you may be collected by a vehicle for the short drive back (about 15 minutes), sometimes stopping for sundowners along the way, or if you are feeling energetic, you can walk back to camp.
Start time: Approximately 4.00pm
Duration of excursion: 2-3 hours
Maximum size of group: 6 people
Notes: The walk to the village is over steep and uneven ground in places, so closed shoes are recommended, as is a reasonable level of fitness. If preferred, guests can choose to skip the walk and be driven both to and from the village instead.
